Butterfly Nebula (NGC 6302)

A dying star with wings. Gas races outward in two glowing lobes shaped like a butterfly, sculpted by a dense belt of dust around the star's waist. The star hiding in the middle is one of the hottest known, around 250,000 degrees. Butterflies on Earth live for weeks; this one will glow for thousands of years.
