A slim ribbon of dust that wriggles across the bright star clouds in a perfect S, like a serpent crossing a golden road. Edward Barnard cataloged it over a century ago while photographing the Milky Way's dark markings, proving they are real clouds and not gaps. The serpent is one of his prettiest finds.
