The nearest large galaxy, a swirl of around a trillion suns, and the most distant thing you can see with your bare eyes on a dark night. The light hitting your eye left Andromeda 2.5 million years ago, when our ancestors were just learning to walk upright. Andromeda and our Milky Way are slowly drifting toward each other and will merge in about four billion years, into one enormous galaxy.
