The smallest constellation in the sky, and one of the most beloved: four bright stars in a compact cross that navigators of the southern hemisphere have steered by for centuries, since its long beam points toward the south celestial pole. It decorates the flags of Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and others. Beside it gapes the dark Coalsack, the sky's most famous shadow.
