In 1991 a detector in Utah recorded a single proton carrying the kinetic energy of a well thrown baseball, traveling so close to light speed that the difference defies writing out. Physicists named it accordingly. What accelerates particles to such energies, monstrous black hole jets, colliding galaxies, something unknown, remains one of astrophysics' great open questions.
