The record sprinter among stars, clocked at around 1,750 kilometers per second, and its launch site can be traced precisely: the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy. About five million years ago this star and a partner swung too close; the partner was captured, and S5-HVS1 was hurled away forever. The galaxy's own slingshot, caught in the act.
