Light is the fastest thing there is, and one second of it covers 300,000 kilometers, about three quarters of the way to the Moon. When astronauts spoke with Houston, every answer arrived with a noticeable pause: their words crossed more than one light second each way. This ring is the first rung of the cosmic ladder; everything else is climbing.
