The solar system's own meter stick: one astronomical unit is the average distance between Earth and Sun, about 150 million kilometers or 8.3 light minutes. Mars orbits at 1.5 of them, Jupiter at 5.2, Neptune at 30. Astronomers invented the unit because kilometers become absurd out here, and it keeps the neighborhood map readable.
