A baby star wrapped in a disk of gas and dust, photographed by the ALMA observatory in an image that stunned astronomers: crisp bright rings separated by dark gaps, most likely lanes swept clean by newborn planets. Nobody expected worlds to form this fast. HL Tauri is a snapshot of what our own solar system looked like 4.6 billion years ago.
