A collapsing clump heats up as it shrinks, glowing from gravitational squeeze alone, not yet fusion. The infalling gas flattens into a spinning disk, the future planetary system, while the baby star fires jets of gas from its poles like birth announcements. When the core finally hits about ten million degrees, fusion ignites, and a star is officially born.
