Fermi watches the sky in gamma rays, the most energetic form of light, born in the universe's most extreme events: exploding stars, feeding black holes and colliding neutron stars. Its biggest surprise sits at home: two colossal bubbles of glowing gas, stacked above and below the center of our own Milky Way, blown out by our galaxy's past tantrums.
