In 2013, astronomers watched Chariklo pass in front of a star and saw the starlight blink twice before and twice after: two crisp rings around a body only 250 kilometers wide. Until that night, rings were thought to be a privilege of giant planets. Chariklo, the smallest ringed world known, rewrote that rule in a few seconds of flickering light.
