4. The Red Giant
STAR LIFE · the great swelling
When the core's hydrogen runs dry, the balance breaks: the core contracts and heats while the outer layers balloon outward, swelling the star into a cool, red giant. The Sun will reach this stage in about five billion years, growing so large it may swallow Mercury and Venus and roast Earth. Old stars do not shrink quietly; they go big first.
